Apple’s Bad Week Provides Newsjacking Opportunity

Apple’s not exactly having a good week. First, consumers got an unpleasant surprise when they found out that the new iPhone 6 Plus bends – and not intentionally. Then, the iOS 8.0.1 locked thousands of users’ phones, making them unusable. Finally, the company’s stock has gone down roughly $23 billion since the iPhone 6 came out.

While Apple has been having a rough go of it, other brands are taking to social media using #bendgate to capitalize on the situation. Everyone from rival LG USA Mobile to KitKat has been posting tweets about #bendgate and they’ve been getting some major attention.

For the most part, these brands are all excellent examples of newsjacking. If you’re not familiar with this tactic, newsjacking refers to commenting on a current event that’s relevant to your brand. In this case, consumer brands across the board jumped on the newsjacking bandwagon because Apple is such an iconic product.
